Babble - The rabble.ca Discussion Forum
In the novel 1984 George Orwell depicts a world where powerful and secretive authorities — “Big Brother” — scrutinize the intimate details of citizens' personal lives. That fiction may be closer to reality than most people think. Emboldened by a new post-Cold War role in the U.S.-led “war on terrorism,” security and intelligence agencies are exploring new electronic technologies that will enhance the collection and dissemination of the private records of citizens across international borders.

Liberty Forum
The objective of LibertyForum is not just to preach libertarian principles, but also to practice them. What this means is that we, the libertarians of LibertyForum, have made a conscious decision to live by our principles and allow freedom-of-speech to exist in our forum. This translates, of course, into the fact that we will have a variety of non-libertarians also taking advantage of this principled stance.

Insults Unpunished
"When great evils happen, I am in the habit of looking out for what good may arise from them as consolations to us, and Providence has in fact so established the order of things, as that most evils are the means of producing some good." -- Thomas Jefferson to Benjamin Rush, 1800. ME 10:173

Marriage and Legal Recognition of Same-sex Unions
Marriage has been widely debated in recent years. Perhaps no single issue touches more people. Everyone — those who are married, those who have chosen not to marry or remarry and those who have not had the opportunity to choose — has an opinion. Their opinions are based on their own experiences and on the experiences of their parents, their children and families, friends and neighbours, as well as on their values and beliefs.

ProudToBeCanadian
We are up-front about the fact that our editorial persuasion is politically conservative (it's written right on our banner). We do allow the left-wing (Liberals; and the extreme left wing, the NDP) to participate as long as they remember they're guests here. So yes, they can make a short comment or two, but they should know that this is primarily a site that gives a voice to conservatives, and we won't allow the liberal-left to dominate the forums by dogging conservatives with a liberal answer for every single conservative post, nor to make long speeches and lectures and "Bush sucks" posts -- we believe the left has the taxpayer-funded and state-run CBC (including their state-run forums which compete against this one with our tax dollars) so they're fairly well covered that way already.

Media Monitor
The media do more than create a false impression through such editorial policies: they also help to create and/or reinforce the "pro-life" groups themselves, many of which would not even exist were it not for the attention which the media pay to them. One of the absurdities of Canadian journalism during the past few years is seeing the number of times someone like Cheryl Eckstein (self-proclaimed head of the "Compassionate Healthcare Network" in Surrey, BC) gets quoted in articles simply because she has become known as being an "anti-euthanasist." Apparently once you become known as such, lazy journalists keep calling you for a quote, and pretty soon you become a permanent fixture in the media's manufacture of "controversy". The general public is mislead and misinformed by media intent upon presenting staged "conflict" as news-entertainment.

Independent Media Center
9/11 Roundtable Reasonable Doubts: Do we know what really happened on September 11th? A special roundtable edition of Mediafile. VisionTV Insight: Mediafile host Barrie Zwicker raised a number of questions – and eyebrows – in a series of controversial commentaries suggesting the official narrative for the events of Sept. 11 was "frankly implausible." Apparently, he wasn’t the only one with serious doubts.

Independent Media TV
Independent Media is designed to be an independent media outlet for views and artistic expression which are currently not being represented by our corporate media. The Philosophical, and Independent Artist areas are designed to be a forum of expression for artists of Music, Movies, Writing, Art, Philosophy, and Spirituality. This is needed as the corporate media monopoly controls the majority of what we see and hear.

Yet just a few corporate players control much of the media system that shapes our culture. ACME, free of corporate media funding, is a strategic network linking media educators, health advocates, media reformers, independent media makers, community organizers and others.

Canadian Public Opinion Polls on Same-Sex Marriage
A battle has been in progress for years over whether equal rights and equal protection against discrimination should be extended to homosexuals. Recently, this has expanded into the area of same-sex marriage. The core conflict is whether: Marriage should be a special privilege of heterosexuals, and restricted to one man and one woman. This is currently required by law and supported by conservative and most mainline religious institutions in North America, or Whether all adults in loving, supportive, and committed relationships should be allowed to marry or enter into civil unions, regardless of their sexual orientation, as proposed by liberal religious groups and some secular organizations. Since mid-1996, most Canadian adults appear to favor same-sex marriage. Three Courts of Appeal, in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec, have concluded that denial of marriage to gays and lesbians is unconstitutional.

The Mystery of Polling
In another article posted here (A Review of the Royal Bank Workplace Survey) I note that a report by Angus Reid Group doesn't give us all the information necessary to evaluate the results of the poll it describes. I have since found by inspection of the websites of other polling companies that in comparison with these other companies the people at Angus Reid are veritable chatterboxes. These other sites post what seem to be press releases, while Angus Reid posted an extensive summary of results.
